Sampoerna Foundation continued to extend its collaboration with the British Council for the scholarship provision under “The British Council – Sampoerna Foundation MBA in the United Kingdom Scholarship Program” through the MoU signing in Sampoerna Foundation’s office, Jakarta.

This cooperation will enable this country’s young generation in pursuing higher education in the United Kingdom. This scholarship scheme will start to take in applications in February 2007.

This program is one of the overseas MBA programs that the Foundation offers. In addition to this, the Foundation also provides regular SF MBA scholarships to America, MBA scholarships to Australia (in cooperation with AEI), MBA scholarships to France (in cooperation SCAC), and MBA scholarships to Singapore (in cooperation with Singapore Education).

For the Foundation’s Graduate programs, the scholarships given are mainly focused on business and management major. With this emphasis, the Foundation expects to give birth to highly-qualified leaders with international standard who can help rectify the economic sector in this country.

Since the program was launched in 2004, Sampoerna Foundation, together with the British Council, has sent four of its best scholars to the United Kingdom. There, they pursue their MBA studies for 2 years at the London Business School or the Manchester Business School. This is a full-scholarship that covers the university admission fee, TOEFL tests, tuition fee, living allowance, book allowance and return ticket to Indonesia annually.

“Partnering with the British Council is a great advancement for us and for Indonesia. The British Council is one of the few organizations that has a strong expertise in education and we are here to learn for them so that we can continue to improve the quality of education in Indonesia”, as stated by Elan Merdy, the Chief Operating Officer of Sampoerna Foundation.

Furthermore, Elan asserted that such partnership should be developed by other institutions. According to him, any institution or organizations that have similar vision and mission should work together so that their activities are completing each other and not overlapping each other. “We hope that a strong alliance between institutions, SF scholarship recipients and more than 900 Indonesian students who are currently studying in the United Kingdom can bring a good synergy to produce the optimal sense of convenience and security,” he stated.

At the same time, Prof. Mike Hardy on behalf of the British Council affirmed that the collaboration with Sampoerna Foundation has been tremendously positive for the education sector in Indonesia. “This partnership will provide a greater opportunity for leading Indonesian students in pursuing their higher education in the United Kingdom. The business schools in the UK have allocated four of its representatives in the top 10 business schools in the world (outside America). Hopefully, the increasing number of Indonesians who continue their education will boost Indonesia’s social status and economic locally and internationally,” Mike Hardy added.
