Postdoctoral position in bioelectrochemical and microbial fuel cell systems
The Water & Environmental Engineering (WEE) program at the Masdar Institute is seeking an individual with extraordinary research skills to fill a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position on a project related to the development and testing of cellulosic microbial fuel cells and its applications. The project is run jointly with a research team at MIT. The post-doctoral position is for the duration of one calendar year with the possibility for extension. The position is based in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Specific technical and research skills needed for this position include the following:
1. Experience with setting-up and running experiments with bioelectrochemical systems (BESs)(e.g., cyclic voltammetry, electron impedence spectroscopy, etc.).
2. Working knowledge of microbiological techniques for enrichment and isolation of microorganisms from municipal wastewater, and, possibly, anaerobic pure culture technique.
3. Knowledge of either molecular biological techniques, such as DGGE, or analytical chemistry techniques for monitoring fermentative cultures, or both.
The primary responsibilities of this position will be to (1) set-up, test, and monitor experiments with mixed and pure culture anodic-chamber BESs; (2) record and publish findings from such experiments; (3) train and supervise graduate students in laboratory techniques related to experiments with BESs; (4) maintain laboratory instrumentation needed for monitoring BES experiments; and, (5) identify and scope-out research projects for further study. The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in Chemical/Environmental Engineering, Microbiology/Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related discipline. Salary compensation will be commensurate with education and experience.
To apply: To apply, candidates must submit a CV and names/contact information of 2 professional or academic references. Applications can be submitted electronically to Dr. Farrukh Ahmad (fahmad@masdar.ac.ae).
