Post Doctoral fellow – Water Resources [University of Canterbury, New Zealand]
Closing date: 12 September 2010
Start date: No later than Nov. 8th or as soon as possible thereafter.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a two-year, fixed-term Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Water Resources Modelling with a specific focus on the Mekong region in Southeast Asia. Candidates are expected to have completed a PhD degree in an appropriate discipline, and have published in international journals.
Candidates should have expertise in hydrological and hydraulic modelling (knowledge of HEC-HMS and HEC-ResSim is an advantage), GIS (ArcGIS), hydro-dam operations, and a strong interest in international development issues and ecological impacts. A good understanding of sediment transport, river monitoring, and climate change is also expected. Good verbal and written communication skills in English are essential. The successful candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary project team studying the impact of anthropogenic-induced changes on water flows in the Mekong River and its tributaries. Although the position is based in New Zealand, the successful candidate should be willing and available to travel to the Mekong region for data gathering, stakeholder meetings, modelling demonstrations, and partner collaborations. Local knowledge of one or more countries in the region (Cambodia, Lao PDR, Vietnam, Thailand) will be considered an advantage.
