Postdoctoral Fellow – Aquatic Molecular Foodweb Ecologist

CSIRO – Postdoctoral Fellow – Aquatic Molecular Foodweb Ecologist

The Position:
Working within CSIRO Land & Water’s Catchment Biogeochemistry and Aquatic Ecology program, the Postdoctoral Fellow will assess riverine ecosystem health by linking changes in aquatic food web community composition and organic carbon utilisation, with environmental alterations in physical, chemical and hydrological conditions. Studies will focus on regulated, lowland, floodplain rivers where both autochthonous and allochthonous organic carbon supplies may be important.

Location: Urrbrae, Adelaide, South Australia
Salary: $73K – $80K plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Reference No: 2010/596

Specifically you will:

- Contribute to the development of innovative concepts and techniques for describing the structure and functioning of riverine aquatic foodwebs.

- Conduct laboratory and field experiments to identify the community composition and to measure the transfer of organic materials through component aquatic food chains.

- Develop quantitative models of aquatic foodweb structure and function that link changes in community composition and organic carbon utilization with environmental alterations in physical, chemical and hydrological conditions.

To be successful you will need:

- A PhD in molecular studies of aquatic foodwebs (or a closely related field) confirmed within the last 3 years.

- Demonstrated knowledge of freshwater ecology and environmental ecogeonomics with an emphasis on measuring biodiversity and foodweb functioning.

- Highly developed skills in molecular biology with practical experience of using state of the art techniques to characterize microbial communities including bacteria, archaea and eukaryotic organisms.
