In appointing scholars, the selectors will look for distinction of intellect and character as evidenced both by their <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">scholastic attainments<\/span> and by their other <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">activities and achievements<\/span>. <!--more-->Preference will be given to candidates who display a potential to make a significant contribution to their own society. Selectors will also look for strong motivation and seriousness of purpose, including the presentation of a specific and realistic academic program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To be eligible for a 2009 Marshall Scholarship, candidates must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>be citizens of the United States of America (at the time they apply for a scholarship);<\/li>\n<li>(by the time they take up their scholarship ie September 2009) hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States;<\/li>\n<li>have obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.7 (or A-) on their undergraduate degree.
